"Charles Sheldon is a first-rate sportsman and naturalist…when in 1904 Sheldon and I hunted over the mountain ranges, we were in a country where in all probability the foot of a white man had never trodden before." -F.C. SelousThe upper Yukon is, of course, a land which the adventure of the gold seekers has claimed as its own. Yet Charles Sheldon's 1911 book "The Wilderness of the Upper Yukon" of his explorations for wild sheep in sub-Arctic mountains has become one of the standard books on early Yukon wilderness. Sheldon's volume is essentially a hunter's book, and will be most appreciated by those to whom all incidents of the chase are gratifying. This is an account of explorations for wild sheep in the sub-Arctic mountains. In his several expeditions in the neighborhood of the sources of the Yukon and its tributaries Sheldon was sometimes alone and sometimes accompanied by such other desirable companions as Mr. Selous, the famous elephant hunter; Mr. Osgood, of the United States Biological Survey. In his interesting book, "Recent Hunting Trips in British North America," F. C. Selous gives an account of the trip up the MacMillan River, writing:"The country lying between the north and the south forks of the Macmillan and north and south of both those streams still remained entirely unknown and unexplored, so that when in 1904 Mr. Sheldon and I hunted over the mountain ranges lying just south of the north fork, we were in a country where in all probability the foot of a white man had never trodden before."We had with us but one man a piece, and as the country in which we found ourselves was absolutely uninhabited, Indian guides or packers were unobtainable, and we had therefore to carry all our camp-gear, blankets and provisions up into the mountains on our own backs, and thus limited under great difficulties; but still with fair success, all things considered."Sheldon was a careful and trained observer of animal life and the book is filled with interesting new observations on the habits of animals, many of which correct old and mistaken beliefs. The book is a daily record of experiences, simply told, with enough of detail to enable the reader to share in the exhilarating experiences of the author in the wild mountains of the north. In describing the difficulties associated with clouds of mosquitos, Sheldon writes: "All of us slept under mosquito netting. The horses suffered the most, and we had to build several smudges and keep them going all day so that the animals could gather around them. If these smudges were not kept up, the horses would come about the tents and almost beg for them. They would stand about them all day, and feed mostly at night when the swarm temporarily retired from the cold."In describing coming upon a remote Native village, Sheldon writes:"As the Vidette rounded the curve into Ross River and made fast, I gazed from the deck at the multitude of Indians—men, women, and children—all assembled on the bank and nervously rushing about. That tribe of Indians had been less in contact with white men than any other in the north. The sight was one to be long remembered. When the gang-plank was put out I suddenly rode Danger to the shore and approached the Indians on a trot, while men, women, and children were fleeing in all directions and shouting in fright. My progress was suddenly checked, however, for at once a dozen or more dogs rushed at the horse, howling and snapping. If the trappers had not quickly beaten them off, the horse surely would have been disabled."For both the naturalist and the hunter, the volume should be both interesting as a narrative and valuable as a source of information.About the author:Charles Alexander Sheldon (1867 – 1928) was a big game hunter, conservationist, and the "Father of Denali National Park."
